The Brother MFC-J6545DW INKvestment Tank Color Inkjet All-in-One Printer is a light- to medium-duty wide-format AIO designed for use in a small office. It scans, copies, and faxes tabloid-size (11-by-17-inch) pages in addition to printing them. And it does so reasonably quickly, with good production quality and low operating expenses.
The MFC-J6545DW costs less than the higher-end Editors’ Choice Brother MFC-J6945DW, but you sacrifice a lot in exchange, including automatic two-sided scanning and copying and a smaller paper input capacity. If your office does not require these functions, the MFC-J6545DW is a viable option. Of course, an AIO that prints, scans, copies, and faxes tabloid-size pages must be large enough to accommodate and process larger sheets of paper.

Everything must be wide-format, which is almost double the width and depth of regular letter-size media. This includes the paper trays, scanner, automated document feeder (ADF), and the paper path itself. Having said that, the MFC-J6545DW measures 12.2 by 22.6 by 18.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 44.3 pounds, indicating that it will require a dedicated place.
That size, though, is consistent with other wide-format printers we’ve recently examined, such as the MFC-J6945DW, Epson WorkForce WF-7710, HP OfficeJet Pro 7720, and HP OfficeJet Pro 7740. The MFC-J6545DW, like its more expensive brother, the MFC-J6945DW, includes a 50-sheet automated document feeder (ADF). However, unlike its more expensive sibling, it cannot scan or copy two-sided multipage documents without the need for you to physically flip the originals over to capture the other sides.
Both the HP 7720 and the Epson WF-7710 have ADFs, but only the Epson model holds 35 pages and offers auto-duplexing. In addition, OfficeJet cannot scan or copy wide-format pages. The MFC-J6545DW, like most business-oriented AIOs, offers two methods for monitoring, customizing, and executing walk-up operations like copying and connecting to the cloud and social networking sites. The control panel is standard for the Business Smart Pro Series, with a few buttons and a number pad centered by a 3.7-inch color touch screen, as illustrated below.
