Because of its quietness, the CX6500 is ideal for a small office that requires a lot of photo printouts. It’s also a great printer to have around the house if the user doesn’t want to bother their family or housemates while printing. The unit can print, scan, and photocopy, but it lacks a fax modem, despite having a number pad on the front panel. Epson promotes its DuraBrite ink technology on this model, which the company claims can withstand spills and has extra UV light protection.

The input tray at the back of this unit can hold up to 70 sheets of paper, and the printer produced text that was close to laser-quality at its highest quality setting. At the highest quality setting, text documents were very sharp and not overly black during our tests. A full page of text took only 40 seconds to produce at this quality setting. In just 22 seconds, normal mode produced slightly lighter coloured text with less crisp lettering, while economy mode produced light grey text at low resolution for comfortable proof – reading in just 16 seconds.
The printer produced images with excellent detail and barely noticeable colour banding in areas of gradation when set to photo-quality, though their colouring did lean more towards the blue end of the spectrum. The built-in card reader allows you to print from memory cards, but because it lacks a large colour LCD, an index page must be produced first. The user picks which images they want printed and at what quality on the index page by filling in the circles with a pen and then scanning the sheet. The machine recognises the scan selections and prints the photographs without further involvement.
