The Epson RX610 is a multi-function printer designed especially for consumers who want to print digital images, scan old photos, and make photocopies of documents and photos. It’s a large gadget with a straight paper path, so it’ll take up a lot of desk space because the paper is loaded from the back and retrieved from the front. A USB cable links it to a PC.
The RX610 can print on A4, 6x4in, and printable CDs and DVDs. A disc tray is provided for the latter, which can be inserted once the paper tray lever has been adjusted to accept it. Epson has software for putting out photographs and text on a disc, although it can be a little tricky to use, especially when laying down text. The menu system of the unit is easy navigable utilising the arrow and selection buttons on the control panel. It even offers features like red-eye correction and brightness changes for printing directly from a memory card.
Under the hood, the RX610 requires six ink cartridges with 90 nozzles each: cyan, magenta, yellow, black, light cyan, and light magenta. These cartridges are mounted on the printhead and move side by side with each print. The printer’s vibration is negligible, and noise isn’t an issue except during paper feed operations. When 22 6x4in photographs were produced, yellow was the most consumed colour (two-thirds were utilised), while black and blue were the least used (less than half was used). It’s better to keep replacement cartridges on hand for large tasks (they can cost between $17 and $25 each).
The RX610 delivers photos with great resolution and colour reproduction. It prints a typical 6x4in photo in slightly over 2 minutes, whether from a PC or a memory card, and a complete page of black 10-point text in roughly 16 seconds. On plain paper, the text quality from this unit is quite sharp; there was hardly no feathering, and reverse text (with coloured backdrop highlights) was perfectly legible. Small and bolded text came out clean and readable as well.
